Getting Adjusted Only When You Must

Here’s a common theme that presents itself for many new patients coming into my office, “I’ve been to a chiropractor before. I go whenever I need it, whenever my pain gets so bad that I can’t take it any more.

Waiting until the symptoms are unbearable is the most common strategy I hear, and it’s the most expensive. The same way that changing your oil only when your engine is about to seize up is one way of handling things, although not the best way.

Maybe deciding to brush your teeth after the dentist is getting ready to remove all of your teeth? (I could do this all day, coming up with various examples of how maintaining your health is way better than waiting for it to fail you.) Working on things before they break is perhaps the least expensive, if not the most enjoyable way to approach your health, yet almost no one does it.

If someone comes into my office as a brand new patient with no symptoms, they are certainly the exception instead of the rule. You will likely never reach this point, so let’s take it a more common sense and acceptable way; just don’t wait until it’s so bad you can’t take it one more day.

Let’s try to do something about it when you get the first “uh oh” in your mind. When your back is giving you that “feeling” that you hope won’t lead to yet another episode of excruciating pain that makes you miss work.

Let’s go after that headache when all the signs are saying you are about to get “one of those headaches” again. You don’t need to wait until it hits. You don’t need to go through all of that trouble.

You will have to call and make an appointment and let chiropractic do its thing to help you get things back in place. So maybe total prevention and wellness will never be you. That’s okay. Just stop ignoring the signs, and don’t just hope it goes away.
